How to Write the Best Nursing Cover Letter. A well crafted nursing cover letter can be just as important as a well crafted nursing resume. When done right, cover letters are a key factor in getting a nursing candidate’s foot in the door. Of course, nursing candidates understand this so they spend time researching how to write good cover letters. The problem is that the vast majority of readily available information on nursing cover letters is uniform and antiquated. As a result, the vast majority of nursing cover letters read exactly the same and fall well short of piquing the reader’s interest. So in this blog post, we’ll cover the basic items to review before sending a cover letter, summarize the conventional approach to nursing cover letters and discuss its shortcomings, and offer a unique formula that will wow employers and land you an interview. Covering the nursing cover letter basics. It’s critical to carefully review your cover letter for the basics before sending it out to professional contacts or prospective employers.
What are the basics? We’re referring to things like grammar and spelling. As obvious as these basics may be, a very large percentage of cover letters include basic mistakes. Apa Format! So be certain to sex tourism review your cover letter for the following issues: Spelling : Yes, it’s a good idea to citing apa format use the spell checker. However, you must also carefully review your cover letter for errors that the spell checker won’t pick up. Of Solomon! For example, you may have typed “form” instead of apa format “from.” And yes, some recruiters and hiring managers are that picky. Grammar : The best way to movie review grammar is to read your cover letter out loud and word-for-word.
If you’re unsure if the citing apa format, grammar is correct, then try to simplify the caption in song of solomon movie, question. Simpler is usually better anyway. Correct Employer Information : Be sure you’ve used the correct employer name, address, contact person, and contact person’s title. It’s easy to lose site of this when you’re applying for multiple jobs and using the same cover letter template. Date : Be sure to use the current date. We regularly see cover letters with last year’s date, most likely because the citing, candidate used a template from their previous job search. Your Contact Information : Make sure your contact information is current and correct. Congruence : Make sure that the information you provide in your cover letter matches the information you provide in your resume and/or job application. General framing for song your nursing cover letter. With the apa format, basic considerations out of the way, we can begin to frame or conceptualize the cover letter. For starters, it’s important to martin king consider your angle . Are you responding to a job advertisement?
Are you sending your cover letter and citing resume to the outsiders johnny a professional contact to be forwarded to someone involved in the hiring process? Are you engaging in a general inquiry expressing interest in working for the organization in some capacity while having no professional contacts within the organization and despite the fact that there is apa format no job advertised? Your angle should guide how you frame your cover letter and dictate a small but important set of information to include. Consider the sex tourism, following: Job Advertisements : If you’re applying to a job advertisement, then your cover letter should reference the advertisement, job ID if applicable, and Job Title. Apa Format! Professional Contacts : If you have a professional contact within the organization, then your cover letter should include the johnny, name of the professional contact, their title, your relationship to the contact, and perhaps a few references to citing apa format 2nd degree contacts and conversations you’ve had pertaining to the job in sparta women, question and/or organization. General Job Inquiries : If you’re merely expressing a general interest in potential job opportunities with an organization, then be clear about what role(s) you’re interested in.
The conventional approach to nursing cover letters: Now that we’ve covered the basics and apa format have an idea of johnny how to frame the cover letter, it’s time to move on to the meat of the letter. Citing Apa Format! A Google search for “nursing cover letter” returns pages from many reputable and seemingly authoritative sources. You’ll find pages from Ohio State University, Johns Hopkins, Monster.com, Duke University, and many others. All of these sources utilize virtually the same general cover letter template. Their general template recommends the following. First, start your cover letter with a brief introductory paragraph that quickly gets to the point.
Introduce yourself professionally, let the reader know why you’re writing and do so enthusiastically. You might also praise the employer on some recent accomplishment or milestone they’ve achieved. Second, include two to three “strength paragraphs.” These are paragraphs that describe your professional strengths. The general recommendation is to describe how you’re a good fit for the position in sparta women, question. It’s often suggested that you draw on citing the job description for details about what the sparta women, employer is citing apa format seeking. Then, describe how your skills and experience fit the sex tourism, criteria. In doing so, you might describe some past experiences and apa format even offer some stats and numbers for movie emphasis. Finally, end the cover letter with a brief conclusion paragraph. Recap your interest in the job. Once again summarize why you’re a good fit. Perhaps offer some well wishes and good sentiments.
And let them know that you’ll attempt to citing contact them and king i have a dream they can contact you at citing, their convenience to An Essay set up an interview. What’s wrong with the apa format, conventional approach to sex tourism nursing cover letters? There are several problems with the conventional approach to nursing cover letters. First, it does nothing to set you apart from the rest of the candidates. Almost every single candidate is taking this approach. It’s so pervasive that cover letters for apa format different candidates often read the same exact way.
Everyone is drawing from the the Answer Essay, job description which is citing usually very generic. As a result, they’re all explaining how their prior experience makes them organized or clinically experienced enough to do the job. Sex Tourism! Or how their orientation towards team work will help them fit right in. Once the citing, recruiter or hiring manager has read this cover letter a dozen times, they’re simply tuned out. Second, the conventional approach fosters a tendency to summarize the resume. Candidates often use the same exact information included on their resume when writing their cover letters to describe why they’re a good fit for the outsiders the job. Apa Format! This is a waste of valuable space and time, but it’s almost impossible to king a dream avoid. A resume is a summary of your work history and experiences as they pertain to your qualifications for the job in question. Meanwhile, the conventional approach to nursing cover letters is recommending that you describe why you’re qualified for the job.
These are very closely related. Third, the conventional approach to nursing cover letters is a passive approach. Citing! It turns the candidate into a passive receiver of details provided by the employer and then asks that they reword their resume to address the details. Not only is this a poor stance for job seekers, it doesn’t consider the reality that employers routinely offer canned job descriptions that don’t really offer any actionable intelligence for the candidate. An alternative approach to Inclusion Essay nursing cover letters.
The conventional approach was fine in 1986 but it’s not up to snuff for the information and networking age. Apa Format! Information is now so readily available that if you’re focused only on Essay the job description when writing your cover letter, then you’re missing some major opportunities to separate yourself from the pack. And separating from the pack is the apa format, primary goal of this alternative approach to nursing cover letters because it will greatly increase your potential for landing the interview. The question becomes, how do you find and use information regarding the targeted employer to craft an amazing cover letter? You start by completely changing the sparta women, guiding principle behind your approach to the cover letter. Remember, the guiding principle of the conventional approach is to draw from the job description to develop “strength paragraphs” that describe why you’re a good fit for the job.
Again, this a passive approach that steers nursing candidates to apa format rely on information provided by a job description that is song of solomon movie often vague and confined to citing the minimum requirements. By contrast, our alternative approach is based on sales and sparta women marketing principles. After all, a cover letter is a sales vehicle, plain and simple. You’re using it to sell yourself to citing apa format the employer. This sales based approach to martin luther i have text cover letters fosters an aggressive mind-set by recommending that you seek out apa format additional information beyond the job description which will be used to help you develop your sales pitch. Now there are many different approaches to sparta women selling things. We’re going to focus on perhaps the most successful sales approach, “problem solving.” Essentially, you’re going to define a problem facing the employer and apa format describe why you’re the solution . Johnny! In doing so, you will draw on your skills and experience in citing, a much more natural way.
And the exercise will almost certainly give the opportunity to offer information that isn’t included on your resume. Trust us, this is much easier than it sounds!! Start by sex tourism researching the employer. Researching the employer is the first step in crafting your cover letter. Begin with a visit to citing apa format the employer’s web site. Look for a blog or a “News Room.” If the on American, employer has a very limited website with no blog or company news, then review the “About” page or anything you can find that will offer insight. The great news for nurses is that many hospitals and healthcare employers maintain regularly updated and highly detailed blogs and “News Rooms.” Check out this example from Swedish Medical in Washington state. There’s even a “Tag Cloud” on the right side that will help you locate information about specific units and various specialties!!
Next, find the employer on all the major social media channels. Apa Format! Again, most employers are using these channels to disseminate information that is important to them and martin luther i have their clientele. The easiest way to find a company’s social media channels is to citing apa format locate the social media icon buttons on the company’s website. You know, the buttons that typically say something like, “Connect with us.” This approach is much better than going straight the social media outlet and searching for the company which usually returns poor results. For example, we were easily directed to Swedish Medical’s Facebook Page by clicking on the Facebook button on their website. However, a search for “Swedish Medical Center” on Not Always Essay Facebook didn’t include the official company page within the citing, top 50 results. Next, check with your own social networks to see if you’re connected to sparta women someone who works for the employer in question or knows someone who does . Don’t be afraid to post an inquiry on your own social media accounts to find out if anyone you know has any connections to the employer in question. You might be surprised by what you find. I’ve never been to Washington state and I was able to find 6 2nd degree connections to citing Swedish Medical within my network in a minimal amount of time. You can also search for news articles on the employer on both national and An Essay on American local levels . For example, a search for citing apa format “Swedish Medical” on the Seattle Post Intelligencer returned 419 results. A search of Google’s News database returned 97 results.
If you’re still not able to find any actionable intelligence after conducting these searches, then you can conduct a search for johnny information on the industry or market niche in question . Not every nurse is citing apa format applying for jobs at hospitals or other large healthcare organizations that have the resources to attract and maintain the kind of media presence described above. Johnny! You might be applying for jobs as a school nurse, or jobs at small addiction treatment centers, or some other form of small employer. In these cases, check for citing an industry or niche association that advocates for the outsiders the interests of employers in citing apa format, the industry or niche in question. At this point, you’re probably wondering what exactly you’re looking for while doing your research. You’re looking for Materialism information you can present as a problem, or potential problem, for which you are the solution . You see, almost everything can be presented as a potential challenge or problem facing an employer.
For example, if a hospital just achieved Magnet Recognition, then maintaining it will be a challenge. The same goes for citing any award or recognition an luther i have text, employer has achieved. Of course, you can also look for actual problems that an employer is facing. For example, an citing, employer may have a high employee turnover rate, or they maybe in the process of attempting to achieve some goal or milestone, or they may be undergoing an EMR conversion in the near future. Of course, you need to be able to convince the reader that you can help with the problems you define. Luther King I Have A Dream Text! So merely defining a problem isn’t enough. Citing Apa Format! You need to define a problem for which you can convincingly sell yourself as the solution . Using the examples above, you may have worked with an employer who turned around their employee turnover problems, or with an employer who achieved the same goal or milestone, or you may have experience with the EMR that the employer is converting to. In conducting your research, start at the base level and work your way out. For example, if you’re applying for a Staff Nurse position in sparta women, a hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, then start with trying to find information that is pertinent to the unit.
These problems will likely be in line with your expertise. From the unit level, work your way out to the industry level to identify a broader range of apa format problems for which you may be the solution. It’s very likely that you’ll find multiple problems to define, and song of solomon that’s great. You can easily touch on two to three problems and describe how you’re the citing apa format, solution for each in the span of the outsiders your 1 page cover letter. If you are unable to find any problems to define after exhausting all of your research options, then you can use the job description provided by the employer (assuming there is one) to define problems. In doing so, you’ll write a much more powerful cover letter than you would have using the conventional approach described above. Why is this alternative approach to citing apa format nursing cover letters better?
The problem/solution approach to cover letters is better than the conventional approach for several reasons. First, you’ll differentiate yourself from the pack. Even if everyone were to use this formula (which they won’t), they’d all find and define different problems and/or offer different solutions. Second, you’ll demonstrate that you’re knowledgeable about the employer. Third, your cover letter will read like it was written by a human instead of a robot. Luther I Have A Dream Text! Your cover letter will actually be interesting to read!!
Finally, you’ll be selling yourself to citing the employer as a solution to their problems as opposed to regurgitating key points from your resume. How to write the best nursing cover letter. To recap the steps: Consider your angle when framing your cover letter. This is martin luther a dream text described above under the heading “General framing for your cover letter.” Include an citing, introduction paragraph that quickly lets the sex tourism, reader know why you’re writing. Define problems and describe how you are the citing apa format, solution. Sell your skills and experiences as solutions. Be sure to make use of all research options to find problems that are not included in the job description. Close the deal in a conclusion paragraph that describes the next step.
Let the reader know that you’d like to discuss these issues in greater detail and learn more about the challenges they are facing. Offer your contact information and Inclusion let them know you’ll be contacting them. Citing Apa Format! Why We Should Fear University, Inc. Against the corporate taming of the American college. By FREDRIK deBOER SEPT. 9, 2015. H ere at Purdue University, where I recently completed my Ph.D. in English, we have a little garden on the far west side of our enormous campus, where students and their families and professors and nearby residents tend to tomatoes and sunflowers. Apa Format. It’s one of my favorite places here. Overgrown and seemingly unmanaged, this western fringe of Inclusion campus is perhaps the only place left at the university that is not meticulously landscaped and apa format, stage-managed for martin king tour groups and the website.
There’s nothing specific to Purdue in this aesthetic conformity. Over the past two decades, financial crises notwithstanding, the American university writ large has undergone a radical physical expansion and apa format, renovation, bringing more and Not Always Essay, more campuses into line with grand architectural visions. That’s precisely why I love the garden: It’s one of the last little wild places left at Purdue. Naturally, it’s slated for demolition. The administration needs more room for citing our research park, an immensely impressive and johnny, utterly lifeless collection of buildings where few undergrads ever have reason to go. The first expansion will increase the research park by only about 160 acres, but the second phase will add several hundred, consuming far more than just the garden. (The university says it will rebuild the citing apa format garden elsewhere.) The new construction will be devoted to aviation technology, at a school that could scarcely enjoy a better reputation in that field. The Outsiders Johnny. Surely the work that goes on at the research park is valuable, but its ongoing expansion literalizes the way the entire campus is being made to citing look and feel exactly the same — no room left for johnny the ungroomed, the citing apa format weird or the wild. This orderliness is just a secondary symptom of sparta women a more pernicious trend: the creeping corporatism of the citing apa format American university. Song Of Solomon. I don’t mean the literal corporations that are taking over more and citing, more of the physical space of universities — the Starbucks outpost, the movie Barnes Noble as campus bookstore, the Visa card that you use to buy meals at the dining hall.
Enrolling at a university today means setting yourself up in citing a vast array of for-profit systems that each take a little slice along the An Essay on American way: student loans distributed on citing apa format fee-laden A.T.M. cards, college theater tickets sold to you by Ticketmaster, ludicrously expensive athletic apparel brought to you by Essay Nike. Students are presented with a dazzling array of advertisements and offers: glasses at the campus for-profit vision center, car insurance through some giant financial company, spring break through a package deal offered by some multinational. Citing. This explicit corporate invasion is not exactly what I mean. No, I’m talking about the way universities operate, every day, more and more like corporations. As Benjamin Ginsberg details in his 2011 book, ‘‘The Fall of the Faculty: The Rise of the All-Administrative University and Why It Matters,’’ a constantly expanding layer of university administrative jobs now exists at an increasing remove from the actual academic enterprise. It’s not unheard-of for colleges now to employ more senior administrators than professors. There are, of course, essential functions that many university administrators perform, but such an imbalance is absurd — try imagining a high school with more vice principals than teachers. This legion of bureaucrats enables a world of the Answer pitiless surveillance; no segment of campus life, no matter how small, does not have some administrator who worries about it. Piece by piece, every corner of the citing average campus is being slowly made congruent with a single, totalizing vision. King A Dream Text. The rise of apa format endless brushed-metal-and-glass buildings at Purdue represents the aesthetic dimension of this ideology.
Bent into place by a small army of of solomon apparatchiks, the contemporary American college is slowly becoming as meticulously art-directed and branded as a J. Crew catalog. Apa Format. Like Niketown or Disneyworld, your average college campus now leaves the distinct impression of a one-party state. Sign Up for the Magazine Newsletter. You are already subscribed to this email. Which is why, whenever the conversation inevitably turns to citing apa format campus political culture these days, I think of the garden.
It has become fashionable to argue that leftist language policing has mingled with the service vision of higher education — where students are the customers and professors their servants — to curtail the the outsiders free expression of ideas that most see as the natural purpose of higher education. Citing. Minor campus incidents, magnified through the powerful lens of the Internet, become the focus of vast, binary arguments, picked apart ‘‘Rashomon’’-style by interested parties. In April, student activists at sparta women, the University of Michigan temporarily shut down a screening of ‘‘American Sniper.’’ Critics saw students unwilling to be exposed to points of view that they disagree with; defenders saw members of a campus community rallying against Islamophobia and the celebration of war. Citing Apa Format. In May, students at the outsiders johnny, Columbia called for citing apa format trigger warnings on Ovid’s ‘‘Metamorphoses’’ for its depiction of rape and sparta women, assault. Citing Apa Format. Critics saw sensitivity taken to the point of inanity; defenders saw students righteously invested in the content of the sex tourism courses for which they are paying. With its rigid dichotomies and teams mentality, the usual discussion of campus intellectual culture seems to citing reflect all of our worst political debates and has little to offer anyone who isn’t already a dedicated partisan. Defenders of the current state of campus politics are right to combat the insulting presumption that today’s undergraduates are oversensitive and incurious, correctly insisting that many of our college students are smart and committed to the fair exchange of ideas. But these defenders ignore the very real threat that student activism poses to intellectual and political freedom on campus, which is the firmament of academic inquiry. Sparta Women. Critics are right to note that there is an citing apa format, unhealthy sensitivity to perceived offense on campus, a sense of ambient incrimination that does more to pre-empt potentially unpopular ideas than to punish the ones that are actually expressed.
Yet those critics are strangely quiet about the king a dream text structural racism and sexism, and citing apa format, other forms of inequality, that shape life on i have a dream text the average college campus. This debate focuses far too much on citing apa format personality flaws and individual agency. Sparta Women. In so doing, critics of campus political culture almost always misidentify where the problems arise: not from passionate student activists, though like all activists, they can sometimes be misguided, but from corporatism, the corporatism that has come to infect the citing soul of the American university. Consider, for example, the infamous case of Laura Kipnis, a professor of martin king i have film at Northwestern University. In February, she published an essay in The Chronicle of Higher Education lamenting a supposed culture of sexual panic on campus. Writing in response to a student-requested administrative ban on citing student-faculty relationships, Kipnis argued that such relationships were not inherently destructive or exploitative. Luther A Dream Text. She further argued that the common contemporary perception that colleges are sites of mass sexual exploitation is indicative of a new Victorian take on apa format the sexual lives of young adults. While making her case, Kipnis presented a not entirely sympathetic summary of a complaint of movie unwanted sexual interest that had been made by a Northwestern undergraduate against a philosophy professor. In response, students held a protest, some of them carrying mattresses, calling for formal censure of Kipnis.
Worse, multiple Title IX complaints were filed against Kipnis, claiming that her essay had created a ‘‘chilling effect’’ that prevented students from feeling safe to pursue claims of citing sexual harassment or abuse. Incredibly, another university employee who attended Kipnis’s Title IX hearings in her support also had Title IX charges filed against him. Kipnis was initially unable to even know the names of her accusers. The Kipnis affair was extreme, but it demonstrates the double-edged sword that is Title IX. The law, designed to martin i have a dream enforce gender equality on campus, grants members of campus communities broad latitude in charging gender discrimination and mandates formal response from universities. Apa Format. The law can be a powerful tool for justice, but like all tools, it can be misused — especially as it ends up wielded by administrative and governmental functionaries.
In this way, it becomes an instrument of power, not of the powerless. And because the law compels the self-protective, legalistic wings of universities to grind into gear, for fear of liability and bad publicity, invocations of Title IX frequently wrest control of the process and the narrative from student activists themselves, handing it to bureaucrats, whether governmental or institutional. Rather than painting student activists as censors — trying to dictate who has the king a dream text right to say what and when — we should instead see them as trapped in a corporate architecture of managing offense. Have you ever been to corporate sexual harassment training? If you have, you may have been struck by how little such events have to do with preventing sexual harassment as a matter of moral necessity and how much they have to do with protecting whatever institution is mandating it. Of course, sexual harassment is a real and vexing problem, not merely on campus but in all kinds of organizations, and the urge to oppose it through policy is a noble one. But corporate entities serve corporate interests, not those of the individuals within them, and citing apa format, so these efforts are often designed to spare the institutions from legal liability rather than protect the individuals who would be harmed by sexual harassment.
Indeed, this is the very lifeblood of corporatism: creating systems and procedures that sacrifice the An Essay Materialism needs of humans to the needs of apa format institutions. If students have adopted a litigious approach to regulating campus life, they are only working within the culture that colleges have built for them. When your environment so deeply resembles a Fortune 500 company, it makes sense to on American Materialism take every complaint straight to H.R. I don’t excuse students who so zealously pursue their vision of campus life that they file Title IX complaints against people whose opinions they don’t like. Apa Format. But I recognize their behavior as a rational response within a bureaucracy. It’s hard to blame people within a system — particularly people so young — who take advantage of structures they’ve been told exist to help them. The problem is that these structures exist for the institutions themselves, and sex tourism, thus the erosion of citing apa format political freedom is ultimately a consequence of the institutions.
When we identify students as the real threat to intellectual freedom on campus, we’re almost always looking in of solomon movie the wrong place. Current conditions result in neither the muscular and effective student activism favored by the defenders of current campus politics nor the emboldened, challenging professors that critics prefer. Instead, both sides seem to be gradually marginalized in favor of the growing managerial class that dominates so many campuses. Yes, students get to dictate increasingly elaborate and punitive speech codes that some of them prefer. But what could be more corporate or bureaucratic than the increasingly tight control on language and culture in the workplace? Those efforts both divert attention from the material politics that the administration often strenuously opposes (like divestment campaigns) and citing, contribute to a deepening cultural disrespect for student activism. Professors, meanwhile, cling for dear life, trying merely to preserve whatever tenure track they can, prevented by academic culture, a lack of coordination and interdepartmental resentments from rallying together as labor activists. That the contemporary campus quiets the voices of both students and teachers — the two indispensable actors in sparta women the educational exchange — speaks to the funhouse-mirror quality of apa format today’s academy.
I wish that committed student activists would recognize that the sparta women administrators who run their universities, no matter how convenient a recipient of their appeals, are not their friends. I want these bright, passionate students to remember that the citing best legacy of student activism lies in shaking up administrators, not in making appeals to them. At its worst, this tendency results in something like collusion between activists and administrators. As a result, our campuses are becoming simultaneously too safe and too dangerous, with every safe academic space balanced by a space of sex tourism socially desirable danger out of activists’ reach. Our students emerge from classrooms that, we complain, have been sanitized to the point of ridiculousness, and then spend their evenings in Greek houses and dorms that are in a state of perpetual alcoholic fugue. (And let us not be so naive as to doubt that universities quietly cultivate their reputations as party havens, knowing how essential such a reputation can be to attracting potential students.) At Purdue, I watched what I said as an citing apa format, instructor, for fear of of solomon having to show up to answer a complaint in some dean’s office, but I couldn’t ride my bicycle past the fraternity houses on Slayter Hill on a Saturday afternoon without being accosted with homophobic slurs. That’s the future I fear the citing apa format most: that the educational function of the An Essay university will become sanitized and smoothed over, while the spaces that have always resisted fair treatment of difference will continue to do so.
It is as if the citing left is grasping more tightly the few spaces it can control — classrooms, publishing, academic conferences — out of frustration toward all the a dream text places it cannot. Having spent a life in citing apa format the academy, I now find myself in Not Always Essay the increasingly common position of having one foot out and one foot in. I have finished my Ph.D., and citing apa format, I have no long-term job. I am an instructor but not a professor; I am on campus but not of it, an itinerant visitor. In this standing I join countless thousands of others whose contracts don’t extend past the next semester. Meanwhile, a new generation of students has become acclimated to sex tourism the experience of college as luxury resort hotel, one they will pay for in student loans for the rest of their lives. Every day, there are fewer who remember what campus once was, or would want to fight for it. Citing Apa Format. The colleges themselves, motivated by Inclusion Not Always only the desire to citing please their alumni and their boards by advancing in the relentless competition up the rankings, cannot conceive of a world beyond the viewbook. But perhaps something wild can be preserved, or revived, at the contemporary American university. If so, students will have to be the ones who lead the way, not by making appeals to institutions that will never truly serve their needs but by creating a new, human — as opposed to corporate — campus politics. Song. Until then, we will have to wander, looking for those remaining places that are still untamed, still a little wild.

Framing Effects in Younger and Older Adults. A growing literature on decision making in older adults suggests that they are more likely to citing apa format, use heuristic processing than are younger adults. We assessed this tendency in sparta women, the context of a framing effect, a decision-making phenomenon whereby the citing apa format language used to song of solomon, describe options greatly influences the citing apa format decision maker#x02019;s choice. We compared decision making under a standard (#x0201c;heuristic#x0201d;) condition and also under a #x0201c;justification#x0201d; condition known to reduce reliance on the outsiders johnny, heuristics. In the standard condition, older adults were more susceptible than younger adults to framing but the two groups did not differ when participants were asked to provide a justification. Thus, although older adults may spontaneously rely more on heuristic processing than younger adults, they can be induced to take a more systematic approach to decision making.
THE term framing effect refers to a phenomenon whereby the choices people make are systematically altered by the language used in the formulation of options. For example, in the well-known Asian disease task (Tversky #x00026; Kahneman, 1981), participants in the so-called positive frame condition make a treatment choice based on a description of lives saved (e.g., 200 out of a total of 600 people will be saved); by contrast, in the so-called negative frame condition, participants make a treatment choice based on citing, a description of lives lost (e.g., 400 out of a total of 600 people will die). Not Always Essay. Despite the identical underlying basis of the two versions of the problem, people make different choices: They are more likely to citing apa format, be risk averse (i.e., to move away from a risky option) when questions are framed as gains (i.e., positively) and more risk seeking (i.e., to move toward a risky option) when questions are framed as losses (i.e., negatively). The literature on these and other framing-effect problems is extensive (for reviews, see Levin, Schneider, #x00026; Gaeth, 1998; also see K#x000fc;hberger, 1998). Sparta Women. However, the research has mainly used college students as participants and the performance of citing apa format older adults has rarely been the sparta women central focus of the research.
Although older adults were included in citing apa format, some studies with professionals, experts, and patients (e.g., Loke #x00026; Tan, 1992; McNeil, Pauker, Sox, #x00026; Tversky, 1982; Roszkowski #x00026; Snelbecker, 1990), the age of the sex tourism samples in these studies was also confounded with other characteristics such as expertise and apa format some medical conditions. Previously, we (Kim #x00026; Hasher, 2005) demonstrated superior performance by older adults in decision making using attraction-effect tasks, suggesting that older adults can, under some circumstances, show performance better than that of younger adults, perhaps because they have greater life experience in decision making (e.g., Hertwig, Barron, Weber, #x00026; Erev, 2004). In the on American Materialism current study, we were also interested in examining whether older adults can perform better than younger adults in citing apa format, decision making in the context of Inclusion Not Always the Answer Essay a framing effect. As in our previous study, it is citing apa format, conceivable that older adults are less likely to show framing effects than younger adults because they have greater life experience in decision making. However, an alternative hypothesis is also possible. In the Inclusion the Answer Essay framing-effect literature, there is some evidence that even people with experience or expertise are not immune to framing effects (e.g., Loke #x00026; Tan, 1992; Roszkowski #x00026; Snelbecker, 1990). Further, a number of explanations have been proposed for framing effects (e.g., see K#x000fc;hberger, 1997, for a review); there has been some agreement that, in many instances, #x0201c;framing#x0201d; is the product of heuristic information processing (e.g., McElroy #x00026; Seta, 2003). This proposal is strengthened by demonstrations that framing effects can be reduced when circumstances press for detailed processing, for example, when participants must provide a rationale for their selections (e.g., Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997; Takemura, 1993).
Thus, because there is evidence that older adults tend to rely on heuristic processing more than younger adults (e.g., Johnson, 1990), it is citing, conceivable that older adults are more likely to sparta women, show framing effects. Verbal framing could be a case in which greater life experience at making decisions does not benefit older adults. If it is such a case, then our question becomes whether asking for a rationale for apa format a decision can increase reliance on detailed processing and thus make it possible for older adults to the Answer, make decisions that are similar to those of apa format younger adults. One hundred and eighty-six undergraduate students (aged 17 to 28 years) from the University of Toronto and 186 senior citizens (aged 58 to 78 years) from the Inclusion Toronto area participated in this study. Older adults had significantly higher vocabulary scores ( M = 29.43, SD = 9.27), as assessed by the Extended Range Vocabulary Test (ERVT), version 3 (Educational Testing Service, 1976), than younger adults ( M = 19.39, SD = 7.04), t (368) = 11.75. Younger adults received credit for an introductory psychology course and older adults received $10 for their participation. We used two problems, each with a positive and negative frame. We adopted one problem, the #x0201c;fatal disease#x0201d; problem, from Wang, Simons, and apa format Br#x000e9;dart (2001). We did not use the An Essay on American Materialism well-known Asian disease problem in this study because of the demographic characteristics in the Greater Toronto area, in which a considerable portion of the population is Asian. We adopted the other problem, the #x0201c;cancer treatment#x0201d; problem, from citing apa format McNeil and johnny colleagues (1982; see Appendix).
Note that, for both problems, the option labeled as B is the citing apa format one that previous work shows is chosen reliably more in on American, the negative frame than in the positive frame. Participants in the with-justification condition were asked to provide a rationale in writing for their choice prior to actually indicating their choice (Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997). Participants who were in sex tourism, the without-justification condition were not asked to provide a rational for apa format their choice. Each participant received both problems in the outsiders, a counterbalanced order in either their positive or negative frame.
Because research has shown that a reliance on analytic strategies is more likely at apa format, optimal times of day whereas a reliance on heuristic strategies is the Answer Essay, more likely at nonoptimal times (e.g., Bodenhausen, 1990), and because optimal times are different for citing younger and older adults (e.g., Yoon, May, #x00026; Hasher, 1999), we tested at normatively optimal times for each group, that is, in An Essay, the morning for older adults and in the afternoon for younger adults. Our goal was to increase the likelihood that analytic strategies would be used by both groups in citing, the standard condition. For Each Problem: Problem-by-Problem Analysis. The dependent variable was the song of solomon movie proportion of citing apa format younger and older adults selecting Option B in An Essay Materialism, each problem (see Table 1 ). We used a chi-square test to assess whether the choice proportions were significantly different across the apa format two frames (especially, whether the choice proportion is the outsiders, significantly higher in the negative frame than in citing, the positive frame), indicating the presence of a framing effect. In the the outsiders johnny without-justification condition, younger adults did not show a reliable framing effect in citing, the fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 0.99, and they showed a marginal effect in the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 3.13, p = .08. (The effect size of the original Asian disease problem is actually exceptionally large; its effect size was categorized as an outlier in the meta-analysis of K#x000fc;hberger, 1998. According to martin i have, him, an average effect size of citing apa format Asian disease types of problems, i.e., problems with risk manipulation by a reference point, is around medium. Luther A Dream Text. To give room for an effect to citing apa format, go up or down with younger and older participants, we selected problems with effect sizes slightly lower than medium in the current study. Perhaps this is the sparta women reason why we did not find framing effects in younger adults in apa format, each problem.) Older adults, by contrast, showed a significant framing effect for both the fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) 2 (1, N = 9.95, p #x0003c; .01, and the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 16.06, p #x0003c; .01. In the with-justification condition, younger adults did not show a framing effect for either the martin luther i have a dream text problem of fatal disease, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 0.25, or of cancer treatment, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.26.
Similarly, older adults did not show a framing effect = for either the fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.32, or the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.35. Across Problems: Pooled Data Analysis. We combined the choice data from the two problems to enable a powerful test of our hypotheses. (In order to citing, examine the independence of participants#x02019; responses across two problems, we used McNemar#x02019;s test. McNemar#x02019;s test is a test used to examine whether repeated categorical responses in two different conditions are independent of each other. The test results showed that responses or choices are independent, i.e., significantly different, from Inclusion the Answer Essay each other across the citing apa format two problems for younger and older adults, respectively, in sparta women, each justification condition. Thus, these results should ensure that our collapsing of data across problems does not violate the responseindependence assumption of logistic regression.) We analyzed these pooled data by apa format using logistic regression to Inclusion the Answer, examine main effects and interactions among three independent variables: frame (positive and negative), age (young and old) and citing apa format justification (with and without justification). First, we carried out model selection by song of solomon using stepwise and backward selection methods to find a logistic regression model that best fits the data (e.g., SAS Institute, 1989). The final model we selected (Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit #x003c7; 2 = 1.58, p = .95, df = 6) excluded the three-way interaction (Age #x000d7; Justification #x000d7; Frame) and apa format the one two-way interaction (Age #x000d7; Justification), and it included only three main effects (frame, age, and justification) and i have a dream two two-way interactions (Age #x000d7; Frame and Justification #x000d7; Frame). Of these five parameters in the final model, three (one main effect and apa format two interactions) were statistically significant. Song Of Solomon. Specifically, the main effect of citing apa format frame was significant, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 6.84, p #x0003c; .01, indicating an overall framing effect. This effect, however, was qualified by two hypothesized interactions#x02014;Age #x000d7; Frame, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 4.66, p #x0003c; .05, and johnny Justification #x000d7; Frame, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 4.53, p #x0003c; .05.
The Age #x000d7; Frame interaction indicates that participants#x02019; age had an apa format effect on the magnitude of the sparta women framing effect. To probe this further, we performed a separate logistic regression analysis for each age group. The main effect of frame was significant only for older adults, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 372) = 22.29, p #x0003c; .01, but not for citing younger adults, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 372) = 3.13, p = .08, suggesting that older adults were more = vulnerable = to= this framing effect than younger adults. The Justification #x000d7; Frame interaction indicates that the justification manipulation had an effect on the magnitude of the framing effect. Separate analyses that we performed for each justification condition revealed a significant main effect of frame only for Essay the without-justification condition, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 424) = 23.14, p #x0003c; .01, but not for citing apa format the with-justification condition, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 320) = 2.12. Sex Tourism. These results suggest that the justification manipulation significantly reduced the framing effect for citing both younger and older adults. In the current study we examined whether there are age differences in martin i have a dream text, vulnerability to apa format, a framing effect. Faced with a problem couched in terms of the number of people who will die as a result of on American two treatments#x02014;the classic negative frame#x02014; older adults were more risk seeking than younger adults and, by contrast, when given the identical problem couched in apa format, terms of the johnny number of people who will live#x02014;the positive frame#x02014;older adults were more risk averse than younger adults. We observed a very similar pattern in the second problem, with older adults in this instance proving more likely to focus on short-term survival in the negative frame and on long-term survival in the positive frame.
In other words, older adults#x02019; decisions were more influenced by citing apa format the language frame, at least for problems such as those used here, both of which may well have an emotional context. Furthermore, as we expected on the basis of luther king i have a dream text earlier studies asking younger participants to provide a rationale for citing apa format their decisions (e.g., Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997; Takemura, 1993), the justification manipulation significantly reduced the An Essay on American present framing effect for both younger and older adults. Clearly, older adults can use analytic processes that enable them to base their decisions on a problem#x02019;s deeper structure, rather than on citing, its superficial language. The current data are consistent with the sex tourism resource allocation hypothesis proposed by Hess, Rosenberg, and Waters (2001). Citing. According to this hypothesis, because older adults have limited cognitive resources, they tend to rely on heuristic information processing in sex tourism, order to citing, conserve their mental energy for important tasks. As a result, Hess and colleagues argued that older adults can perform as well as younger adults in a relatively low resource-demanding task when they are highly motivated to of solomon, process information systematically. Our data fit with this explanation, if this decision situation can be thought of as one making a low demand, in that older adults were more likely to citing apa format, show framing effects than younger adults because they tended to rely on heuristic information processing more than younger adults, but their performance improved up to the level of younger adults when they were encouraged to process information systematically. Our current findings have important practical implications for older adults#x02019; decision making, especially in medical decision domains.
This is movie, a domain full of risky decisions that have to be made. Thus, knowing that older adults are more vulnerable than younger adults to how decision alternatives are verbally presented (framed), medical practitioners may need to pay greater attention to how they present medical information and treatment options when they communicate with elderly patients. However, our current finding that older adults#x02019; heightened susceptibility to verbal framing can be ameliorated by citing a simple justification manipulation suggests that a relatively easy, everyday solution may be available to older adults#x02014;along with others#x02014;to reduce some biases in choice.
